The new look caused such an uproar that it led to a petition with thousands of signatures to restore Merida’s original look-and Disney listened, sheepishly pulling the new Merida from its website. The new Merida had a slimmer waistline, beachy waves instead of untamed curls, and worst of all, no trademark bow and arrow. So fans were baffled this week when Disney decided to give her a sexy makeover after adding her to their line of princess dolls. She has frizzy hair she beats off potential suitors with her archery skills and (spoiler alert) she rides off on a horse without a prince in the end. Brave is harmless enough and an easy game suitable for all the family, just don't go in expecting something similiar to the movie.Merida, the heroine of Pixar’s Brave, isn’t your typical Disney princess (no offense, Sleeping Beauty).
The only stand out moments in the game are when you play Merida's little brothers (Who are now bear cubs) and perform puzzles, but these are very very easy. You have a sword but will never use it, your bow has 4 elemental modes which you'll use to trigger puzzles and defeat the relevant enemy types with. The environments are repetitious, the enemies come under one of a few models and you guessed it.repeat. Kelly Macdonald reprises her role which does wonders for the games limited credibility but is essentially the only speaking character in the game. You play as Merida as you make your way through simple platforming levels while following your mother and bracing for inevitable combat with Mor'du. Brave is pretty ugly and no doubt a cash grab but it's not actually that bad. Now most video games based on movies or television shows are terrible, they are usually rushed cash grabs with no substance.
As a budding animator I was also blown away with the way Merida's hair had been made (Yep I'm a nerd). I enjoyed the Brave movie, I didn't expect to but I found it a sweet heartfelt Pixar movie that exceeded my expectations.
